eofy for makers: smart fabric shopping tips before june 30
Everyone’s inbox is screaming end of financial year right now. Sale this, last chance that, spreadsheets and receipts and a little bit of dread. So let us talk about the one bit of EOFY planning that actually feels good. Sorting your fabric for the months ahead. 👀
Tax time has a way of making us think about the year that was and the year that is coming. For makers, that same energy is weirdly useful. It is the perfect nudge to look at what you have, work out what you will actually sew, and stop the random panic buys that end up shoved in a tub at the back of the cupboard. We get it. We have all got that tub.
Here are a few fabric shopping tips to carry you into the new financial year feeling sorted, not splurgey.
shop your stash first
Before a single new metre comes home, go through what you already own. Pull it all out, spread it on the bed, have a proper look. You will find things you forgot you loved. You will also find that piece you fell out of love with, and that is ok, that is completely normal.
This little ritual does two things. It reminds you what you already have so you stop doubling up, and it shows you the gaps. Maybe you are swimming in quilting cotton but you have nothing cosy for winter makes. Maybe you have a stack of florals and zero of the coordinates that would tie them together. Now you know what to actually look for.
buy for the project, not the panic
The fastest way to grow a stash you never use is to buy fabric because it is pretty and on sale, with no plan attached. Lovely in the moment. Guilt inducing six months later.
Flip it. Start with the make. A winter jumper for yourself, a quilt for the new bub, school clothes for the kids who keep growing out of everything. Then choose the base and the scale that suit that project. Your Fabric. Your Way. means you get to design the fabric around what you are making, so it pays to know the make first.
Quick reminder on scale while we are here, because it changes everything. Mini is a 10cm repeat, sweet for little makes and kids clothes. Midi is 25cm, your everyday all rounder. Mega is 50cm, bold and brilliant for quilts and statement pieces. Picking the right scale up front saves you that heart sink when the print lands bigger or smaller than you pictured.
plan around the preorder cycle
Here is the bit that rewards the forward thinkers. Our preorders close the last day of every month, and turnaround is roughly 8 to 10 weeks from the end of the round. So the fabric you order now is your late winter and early spring sewing sorted.
Treating EOFY as a planning moment means you are not scrambling later. Have a think about what you want to be making in a couple of months, get it into this round before it closes, and let future you have the happy little doorstep moment when it arrives. 🫶🏻
If touching and feeling is your thing before you commit, a Fabric Sample Pack is a low pressure way to test bases against a project. There is nothing like feeling fabric in your hands to know if it is the one.
a stash that sparks joy, not guilt
The goal here is not a wall of fabric for the sake of it. It is a curated little collection that actually gets sewn, that suits your real life and the things you love to make. Quality over quantity, every time.
Come into the new financial year with a plan, a tidy stash, and a few rad pieces waiting in the next preorder round. That is the kind of bookkeeping we can get behind.
